TAOS–APRIL 8-13  2018

WHERE: Mabel Dodge Luhan House, Taos, New Mexico

WHAT: Art Journal/drawing/sketching/painting & calligraphy

Iluminating the Dark: A Taos Art Journal

The dance of light and dark, of shadows and illumination is the theme of this class.  Whatever our level of experience, art offers a way to transform, elevate and give it form and substance.  As we commune with the beauty of our surroundings, the focus will be on attention to what moves and inspires us, be it rock, fence, sky, bird or dreams, words and feelings. Specifically, students will sketch, paint, draw, write—and have the opportunity to create a unique artist book using black paper, pastels, graphite and gouache.

Studio time, plus daily sketch excursions around the Mabel Dodge property offer opportunities for honing sketching, drawing and painting skills while we enjoy the unique beauty of Taos in the Spring.  An emphasis on mindfulness and attention will help us learn to really see what we are drawing or painting, and each day will begin with simple stretches and poetry readings.

Students will further explore developing a personal script from their handwriting/calligraphy to use in their unique artist book.

Skill-building lessons offered in the following areas:

*simple watercolor & gouache painting

*graphite/colored pencil

*handwriting & calligraphy
